Jean Nathan Elizalde’s “The Detective”
in Working It Out: San Francisco Youth Solve Real Problems
Hi! My name is Jean Nathan Elizalde. I was born in California, but my mom was born in El Salvador, and my dad is from Ecuador. So, yeah, I’m a normal 12-year-old guy. My favorite hobby is making stuff. My dream is to become an ELC (Engineering Liaison Council) engineer.
Who, what, when, where, why and how? Those are the questions a detective asks. And me? I was a detective one day while living in an old apartment on Geneva. I was just two at the time. And my stuffed bear, Juju, was missing!
Juju was a fat little stuffed bear with red boxing gloves. About a foot tall, he had short legs and white fur. But his face was brown and his nose black. His eyes were brown, as were his ears and legs. He was a normal friendly bear, walking fast and slow, always happy and liking to play. But he was missing!
I searched out every piece of evidence. I looked everywhere! I couldn’t yet talk, but I had my trusty blanket of justice! The first place I looked was the closet. The closet was warm inside. I could smell the dust in the closet, and could feel the cloth of things stored there. And I was right! Juju was all the way up on the top shelf.
Ah, man! It was getting dark. I needed to get my Juju. How to do it? I was confused and mad. Then I got an idea. I swung my blanket so hard everything fell out on top of me. I crawled out and grabbed my Juju. My mom said to me, “You’re so cute!” She took a picture, and I crawled away.
