in Walking on Thin Ice: Stories of Predicaments, Challenges and Troubles by San Francisco Youth

The roaring engines took us up swiftly. I saw the airport going by us. As we flew even higher I saw the city. The city looked like a city for ants and the cars looked like toys. It reminded me of Legos. It looked so small that I could just step on it and do as much damage as an earthquake. Soon the airplane soared swiftly above the clouds and my ears began popping like popcorn. They felt like a row of firecrackers that were exploding one by one.

It had been an hour, and China was still about a day away.

Now all I saw were clouds and if there weren’t any clouds, all you could see was blue ocean. I began to feel bored. A movie started, but it was the kind of movie that I hated. It was one of those mystery movies with all talk and little action. I knew from that moment that this was going to be a really, really long flight….

Then a flight attendant came with our lunch…pushing a cart with food. She gave me my lunch, but it was not good. I could tell three things instantly. One: this was reheated. Two: it was cooked in a rush because it looked like they mixed cooking with karate—everything was diced including the tuna and bread. Three: I was going to hate it.

After that, I tried my last resort—reading. I asked the flight attendant if they had some kind of magazine. She gave me one that I tried reading, but it just did not work because I was too young to understand it because it was a magazine for adults. Finally, after five hours I got so bored I fell asleep.

When I woke up the trip was almost over. I found another way to entertain myself. When I got out of the plane, I had learned a lot of things about the plane. It had 365 seats, 1433 lights, 6 flight attendants, about 5 people visiting the bathroom an hour, and 243 people were on the airplane. I found this information in the worst way. I counted.

But once I got off the plane and I saw my grandpa, he made me feel that the long plane ride was worth it.
