“All of my students' grades went up. They even did the homework! My students actually looked forward to class each day.

Dream Soup, bookcoverRansley Lau’s “When I Fly”

in Dream Soup: Stories of Dreams by San Francisco Youth

I dreamed that I flew in the sky. It was 11 a.m. I saw a bird, and flew up to a hill. I flew everywhere. I saw an airplane go through me. I tasted a cloud and felt nothing. The cloud looked like a pillow. I flew above the ocean and saw a dolphin jumping. Then I flew to an island that had nothing on it but mountains and a volcano.

Inside the volcano was hot lava. The lava did not burn me but it had lots of smoke coming off it. After I saw the volcano, there was a tornado. It was trying to tear me away. I flew as fast as I could to get away from that tornado. It was black and full of dirt. It was in Oakland. The water was spinning around the tornado, but I got away. I flew to the Golden Gate. Then I saw a bird flying behind me.

The bird had two wings with lots of feathers, a short beak and short legs. It was blue. It was moving like a pigeon. He landed on my back because he was tired of flying. He wanted to lay an egg on my back. I tried to fly back home, but I fell into the ocean. And then I woke up.

My name is Ransley Lau. My birthday is on July 11, 1987. I have one auntie, three uncles, and one brother. My cousins live far, far away, near the Cow Palace. I like to ride my bike in the park and play basketball.
