VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Help out during the school day:

» Work with our Storytelling Exchange program.
Storytelling Exchange volunteers inspire students to write the stories of their lives. They offer writing help one on one and facilitate small group discussions. Bilingual Spanish and Chinese speakers are especially welcome to help with our ESL classes.

Commitment:  Eight classes during a semester.

» Help kids create mini-movies.
Share your tech expertise in our Tech Tales program. During the Tech Tales program, students write stories about their lives and turn them into short movies using our mobile digital media lab. Tech Tales volunteers help students one on one with writing, storyboarding and basic film editing.  If you have used editing programs like iMovie or pick up new tech skills quickly, Tech Tales is the program for you.

Commitment:  Eight classes during a semester.

» Help out at Streetside After School.
Help students write stories and poems about their lives, improve their reading skills, and sharpen their communication skills through theater at Streetside After School

Commitment:  Eight classes during a semester.

Help out in the evenings or weekends:

» Edit student stories:
Help copy edit student stories for publication in our Storytelling Exchange anthology and our Streetside After School zines. Editing is our most popular volunteer option, and volunteer positions are competitive.

Commitment: Flexible

» Journal-making parties:
Spend an evening creating journals for students to use during the workshop.

Commitment: Flexible

» Be an intern.
Internships are available in our Tech Tales program and our Digital Teachers program. We also offer fundraising internships that teach skills in grant writing and event planning. Know a way you’d like to help as an intern? Let us know!

"It all started last year when I was in sixth grade. I went into my first and second period class and sat down. That's when I saw her. She was sitting in front of me, and I had a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach..."
